Tyler, The Creator

Tyler, The Creator - Postmodernism

Homage
Does your chosen artist use other people’s music in a respectful way? Are they bringing a potentially overlooked or forgotten style to a new audience?
A song by Tyler, The Creator called ‘Smuckers’ featuring Kanye West and Lil Wayne uses a backing track at 3:12 which is a soul jazz song that sounds very similar to a song produced in 1970 by Gabriele Ducros called ‘Metropolis Notte’. Tyler, The Creator has not put the jazz song into his, he has altered it very slightly by changing the key a little, therefore making it sound different to the original. Tyler, The Creator has brought soul jazz music, a somewhat forgotten about 70’s genre, into the 21st century by combining it with modern day rap music. Tyler pays homage to an idle of his Eminem, he does this by rapping about similar issues for example people dying, in Tyler’s song Yonkers he syas ‘I'll crash that fuckin' airplane that faggot nigga B.o.B’.

Pastiche
Does your chosen artist use other people’s music in order to mock it and its fans? Are they attempting to damage the ‘authority’ of a style of music?
Tyler, The Creator does use other artist’s music in his songs; however he does not intentionally set out to mock the music or fans of said music. He does not use samples from songs that are long or noticeable therefore offending anyone would be difficult. If he mocked people or music then he would be less successful as people would not want to support him as an artist due what he had said.

Bricolage
Does your chosen artist use music from different time periods or genres? Does this change the ‘meaning’ of the original song?
In the song ‘Buffalo’ Tyler references two traditional folk ‘Peter Piper’, for which it references Peter Piper, it also references ‘Eenie, Meenie, Miny, Moe’ which it refers to the name of the folk song. The use of these lines in this song do not change the original meaning of the folk song as, however due to the language used in this song and the message behind the song, this could be seen as inappropriate as it is a child’s traditional folk tale.

Consumption
How does your chosen artist wish their music to be consumed? Is there an artefact (object) that accompanies their music?
When Tyler first started creating his music the ain form of selling his music would have been on CD however due to the increased popularity of digital downloads this would be the main consumption of his music recently, for example selling his music videos, albums and singles on ITunes or Spotify seems to becoming more used. With his latest album ‘Cherry Bomb’ it had 51,000 sales in the first week of it being released, this shows that although Tyler is ridiculed as an artist due to the explicit content of his songs he is still very popular with his targeted audience.

Creation
How does your artist create their music, are they a musician, a songwriter, or a composer?
Tyler is more commonly known for being a rapper and songwriter; however this is not all he does. He is also a record producer for his record label Odd Future Records; they produce most of the songs created by members of the group odd future, musician, graphic designer, music video director; he is known well for creating and directing his own music videos, and an actor.

Influence
Artists that have influence Tyler are N.E.R.D, they started off Tyler’s love for the rap music and have influenced to create the works of art he produces today. Eminem who has influenced by the sensitive issues they rap about.

Performance
Does your artist play ‘live’? Is there a ‘show’ to accompany? Is there a ‘style’ to their videos? What if any interaction is there with their audience?
Unfortunately due to some of his older songs, Tyler has been banned from performing in the UK as his lyrics were seen as too strong and offensive by many people. Due to this incident the numbers of performances have been cut drastically. Tyler has a very unique style when it comes to the creation of his music videos; he likes to push the boundaries of what is considered appropriate by many people. In his music video ‘BUFFALO’ he paints himself all white and is being chased by a mob of angry black people. The opening scene is him with a rope around his neck hanging from a tree, this is very similar to another of his music videos ‘Yonkers’ in which at the end of the song he appears to hang himself. This is a very touchy subject with some people and therefore has been a talking point when Tyler is mentioned.
